The seat cushions may match the draperies or may be in a harmonizing solid color. Informal rooms may have the color in the short curtains: figured red, for instance, at the windows and plain red for the seat cushions or vice versa. Or they may match. Single windows may have straight or looped back draperies. The draperies may have pinch pleated heading or may be hung from a wooden cornice, or from a straight or shaped valance made from the same or contrasting material. Other windows in the room should be handled in the same way, whether they are single or group windows.
Use pinch pleat heading with traverse rigging of cord and balls so that the curtains may be drawn at night. The best reason in the world for doing this is that it makes the room so much more attractive at night. In summer curtains may be taken down, but in winter they not only make the room cozier but also conserve heat. Use brass rod or small wooden pole across the top of window frame set in the brackets which come with rod or pole. Rings are put on the pole. Hooks, sewed to the curtain at the pinch pleats fasten into the rings so that the curtain is easily drawn by the cord. In fact, draperies made with matched hooks and rings can be drawn by hand to cover the window completely. In this type cords are unnecessary.
Another way to hang straight or ruffled short curtains is to run the rod through a casing made in the top of the curtain. An extension brass rod together with the fixtures to hang it can be found at the dime store and will answer nicely. When glass curtains and draperies are to be used together on single windows, double extension rods can be purchased.
